Where Ritual Meets Craft: An Artist Spotlight On Maria McGervey

For Maria, inspiration often begins with curiosity—a fascination with zodiac signs, tarot symbolism, celestial imagery, and the quiet language of nature. What started with an interest in astrology gradually grew into a visual world filled with stars, crystals, rainbows, and symbols, each carrying its own meaning.

Her creative process is guided by both intuition and intention. Some ideas arrive through dreams, while others are carefully constructed through the meanings behind each symbol. Working with woodburning, carving, foils, and gemstones, she transforms these ideas into richly textured pieces where every material adds another layer to the story.

In this interview, Maria shares how spirituality, intuition, and a love of natural materials come together in her artistic practice.

Drawn to Symbol & Ritual

Q: What first drew you toward tarot, zodiac imagery, and symbolic art? How did spirituality or symbolism begin influencing your creative work?

A:
I’ve always had a great memory for birthday dates, then I started associating dates with zodiac signs and it made me explore the world of astrology. Because astrology is connected to tarot, I also developed obsession with tarot and its symbolism.

Q: What attracts you to handcrafted mediums like woodburning and carving?

A:
I love my ‘nature-made’ canvas and to me the whole process of woodburning and carving is extremely therapeutic. Also, the smell of wood is something that I truly enjoy!

Q: How do crystals, stars, or celestial themes enter your work visually?

A: It’s just something that I’m sincerely attracted to and something that brings me a lot of joy . I love rainbows and it made me start my suncatcher business. Eventually, I started my zodiac series and celestial theme is strongly connected to it.

Q: Are your pieces usually inspired by specific meanings, or more by intuition?

A: I would say intuition, however, I also use logic. It’s a perfect combo of both- quite often my designs appear in my dreams and each element I incorporate is there for a purpose. For example, to create a tarot card I need to know what each symbol/detail means and what could I possibly use to represent a certain element.

Q: Could you share your favorite piece of work at this stage and introduce it briefly?

A:
I love pretty much all of my multi media pieces where I get to incorporate woodburning, carving, foils and gemstones. There are a lot of textures to look at and they make the piece more alive.

Q: What role does storytelling play in your art?

A:
I think it could resonate with some people and also inspire them 🤍

Texture, Detail & Process

Q: How do you decide which medium best fits an idea or symbol?

A: Comes from the heart and also based on my research.

Q: What role does texture play in your work across different materials?

A: Big role! I love how it looks, feels and the depth it creates. This makes people take their
time to observe my artwork closely with a lot of attention.

Q: How do you balance detailed craftsmanship with intuitive creation?

A: As a Libra, it’s my natural instinct 😊

Q: How have Artify brushes or tools supported your creative process, if at all?

A: I received two beautiful kits and til this day I use small brushes that help me paint tiniest details.

Q: What do you enjoy most about working with woodburning or carving techniques?

A: It’s all about the details that form a bigger picture. It makes me stay in the moment and trains my patience along with hyper focus.

Q: Are there moments in the process that feel especially meditative or personal?

A: Probably burning dots, chip carving patterns and carving out “nests” for gemstones.

Expanding the World You’re Building

Q: How do you see your artistic world evolving in the future?

A: I can imagine myself working with larger wooden canvas and working with precious gemstones.

Q: Are there symbols or themes you’re excited to explore more deeply next?

A: I love animals and I would love to create a wildlife collection. Maybe give another try and possibly work on human portraits.

Q: What keeps handcrafted work meaningful to you in a digital world?

A: That’s its real and you can feel it. I appreciate all the effort that goes into it.

Q: What kind of atmosphere or feeling do you hope always remains in your work?

A: Staying present and peaceful, having clear mind and focus.

Q: How would you like people to connect with your work emotionally or spiritually?

A: Both for sure because I am both- spiritual and emotional. I love how everyone is unique and I have appreciation for every perspective.

There is something deeply tactile about Maria’s work. The warmth of wood, the texture of carving, the shimmer of foil, and the sparkle of gemstones turn each piece into something meant to be explored up close.

Blending intuition with symbolism, her art becomes a meeting point between the natural and the mystical—where every detail has a reason to exist, and every piece carries a little bit of wonder.

Sometimes, the most meaningful symbols are the ones that simply make us feel something.
